King Muchukunda Enters the Realm of Mount Gandhamadana to Attain Salvation

This painting, depicting King Muchukunda’s journey to Mount Gandhamadana after his encounter with Krishna, exemplifies the stylistic features of the Guler–Kangra (Pahari) school. The pictorial space occupied by the rocky mountain while the remaining half left as an flat sky. This balance the contrast between the mountain and empty background. King Muchukunda ascends towards the mountain while Krishna is moving in opposite direction. The background is flat, absence of perspective are the characteristics of Pahari Miniature. Use of primary colours- Krishna's deep blue complexion contrasting with the Muchukunda's saffron dhoti. The figures display the idealized physiognomy of the Guler–Kangra style, characterized by bold outlines, receding foreheads, pointed noses in continuous profile, receding chins, full cheeks, and large lotus-petal-shaped eyes. The harmonious composition, decorative treatment of nature, and restrained use of landscape together convey both devotional serenity and the spiritual significance of Muchukunda’s quest for liberation.
