Kim Joong-hyun’s Chunyang (1936) draws upon the famous Korean love story of Chunhyang, presenting themes of love, loyalty, and resistance against social hierarchy. Chunyang’s character is traditionally associated with steadfast devotion and moral integrity despite the pressures imposed by authority and class. The work reflects the tension between personal desire and rigid social conventions, making Chunyang more than a romantic figure. Through expressive composition and stylized forms, Kim captures the emotional strength of a woman determined to remain faithful to her principles. The painting ultimately celebrates love as an act of courage, suggesting that dignity can survive even within oppressive social structures.
