Guptas Kamanganpura is seen as a visual study of the urban architecture of northern India under British rule. Gupta does not focus on religious themes. Instead Gupta turns to a street showing Guptas interest in everyday life and changing social spaces. The narrow winding passage creates a sense of depth. The imposing three-storey residence dominates the composition. Intricately carved balconies, multi-foiled windows projecting structures and vegetation illustrate the distinctive character of traditional Indian architecture. The solitary woman provides scale and introduces a quiet element of everyday life. Guptas mastery of etching is evident, in his use of line, shading and tonal contrasts. Electric wires crossing the buildings subtly signify modernity entering the environment. Thus the work captures a moment in Indian society, where indigenous architectural traditions coexist with colonial-era technological and urban changes.
