Indrajit Meets with Ravana, then Binds Rama and Laksmana with Magic Serpents; Sita is Told They Are Dead

Artist:Sahibdin
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: British Library, London, United Kingdom

This folio is really about deception staged twice which is Indrajit's attack that succeeded as it's hidden (literally placed behind a hill), and Sita's grief comes from a lie she can't verify. That parallel, not the battle itself, feels like the real subject. The synoptic form matters too: by refusing a clear sequence, Sahibdin assumes you already know the story which makes it feels less like narrative illustration and more like a devotional meditation aid, inviting recognition rather than explanation. The strict left-right divide (Rama vs. Lanka) reads like a moral map, made most powerful when Trijata flies Sita across it, forcing her to "see" the good side fall. Sita's turned away gesture is the emotional center for me while everyone else acts, she's only acted upon. Her endurance under manipulation feels like her form of heroism here.
