The painting was created in the Mughal court between 1610-1615 and was brought to Victoria and Albert Museum in London,UK in the year 1921
Manohar Das was a refined and renowned artist in the Mughal court of Akbar and later Jahangir. He grew up with his father Basawan Yadav and learnt painting under his influence. Manohar's works mostly featured court life and portraits of royal people.
"Indian Black Buck being led by it's keeper" is a painting by him that depicts a black buck with a rope tied around his mouth being taken somewhere by it's keeper. The buck takes the central place in this composition while the keeper is painted more to the left side of the paper. The long horns of the buck have been painted with great precision giving the buck a realistic look. His black and white coat,long legs, his beautiful eyes and mouth and it's accurate posture show how keenly the mughal atelier artists observed and painted even animals which are always in motion with so much stability and precision.
The keeper stands besides the black buck in a bended posture tugging on the rope of the buck to take him somewhere. The keeper is wearing a simple orange kurti with an embroidered sash,purple coloured leggings and brown juttis with some red border and a plain white turban. His facial expressions are calm as he tries to take control of the animal.
The painting has a floral border and Persian calligraphy at the top and the bottom with blue corners and flowers around the calligraphy as well.
This painting shows how keen of observers were the Mughal artists and how precise their paintings were. It also depicts the Mughal interest in Persian calligraphy, delicate ornamentation, natural and realistic animal and human paintings.
The painting captures the blackbuck through delicate linear detailing and controlled anatomical rendering, emphasizing its distinctive spiral horns, slender limbs, and alert posture. The keeper introduces a contrasting human presence, creating a subtle relationship between authority and domestication.
