In the Evening (c. 1910), by Abram Arkhipov, depicts a small group of peasant women by the water as the light begins to fade at the end of the day. There is nothing dramatic going on, and that is what makes the picture so attractive. The women are seated together closely by the river their brightly coloured red, blue and white clothing contrasting with the darker background. A boat silently passes in the foreground. Behind them the rough wooden houses and another group of villagers rise along the riverbank. Arkhipov pays attention to these quotidian particulars, to the crooked wooden houses, to the reflections rippling on the water. The loose brushwork works particularly well in the evening light, when the figures and objects seem to soften as they recede into the distance. I like the way the painting gives the feeling that we've just come to this place for a few minutes and are watching life in the village unfold. There’s a quiet sense of companionship among the women, but never does the scene feel staged. Rather, it is a record of the tranquil rhythm of a typical nite and the close relationship of the villagers to their environment.
