Following its display at the 1905 Munich International Exhibition, the Municipality of Venice purchased the masterpiece, permanently housing it within Ca' Pesaro. |
This artwork " II Natale dei rimasti", which is often known as "Christmas for those left behind" by Italian Painter Angelo Morbelli is actually a depiction of what reality looks like for old people, the depiction is not performative in any sense, It quietly captures a lived and observed reality, very deliberate and not staged with a slight pull at emptiness and loneliness that comes with old age. The painting's stillness makes it more true to the depiction of being tired, withdrawn and emotionally distant. In the artwork we see that although the men share the same vast, empty hall, Morbelli yet interestingly places a careful distance between them to show the difference in expression among those men. He gave them space to sit with ones own way of carrying the weight of being left behind. This clearly shows that these men may share the same room and the same fate but the paths that brought them there, and whatever hopes or acceptance they hold onto are entirely their own.
