One of the key pieces from the Macchiaioli art movement is The Milkman of Piagentina (Il lattaio di Piagentina) by Giuseppe Abbati in 1864. The artwork was revolutionary at that time as Abbati managed to break away from grandiose and idealized subjects, which were common for European academies of fine arts. On the contrary, the artist depicted simple realities of daily life, specifically the image of a milkman who works in the countryside of Tuscany in the morning. The colors used are mostly ochre and sepia in order to create an atmosphere of domesticity, rusticity, and loneliness. There are no poses in the painting – Abbati shows psychological realism of labor in this transitional period in Italy. The technique of managing the painting canvas is undoubtedly a classic illustration of the macchia method that was invented by giving up the fine-line drawings in order to build images by means of large spots of color. Abbati builds the figures and their surroundings through accurate geometrically shaped spots of bright light and dark shadows, thereby creating a soft glow of shadow in order to create the atmosphere of a soft glow of shadow. It was created outside in the fields around Florence and shows the basic idea of the artists that light and shadow are the absolute basis of vision. In the painting, the artist creates a combination of ruggedness and atmospheric values so that the natural light can cut through the rural architecture. Currently, this masterpiece is preserved in the Museo Civico of Naples.
The artwork is a very unique one as it describes the larger context of the movement in which it was created. Secondly, the information about the artwork could have been more descriptive as it talks about daily life.
