Idle hours

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, United States
Location History:Created in the United States in 1888, Idle Hours was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in the same year as a gift from several gentlemen. The painting has remained in the museum’s collection since its acquisition and is currently part of the American Wing.

The two figures are seated comfortably, yet neither looks directly toward the viewer, which gives the scene a natural and unposed quality. Caroline holds a guitar across her lap, suggesting that she has been playing or spending time with it during this peaceful moment. The mother appears thoughtful and withdrawn into her own quiet reflection. Weir creates a strong contrast between the women’s light-colored dresses and the darker furniture and interior surroundings. Soft daylight enters through the large windows and sheer curtains.
