Hulagu Khan Giving a Feast and Dispensing Favour upon the Amirs and Princes is a collaborative Mughal miniature by Lal, Dharam Das and Pādarath, ca. 1596-1600, for an illustrated Chingiz Nama. Hulagu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, ruler of Iran, sits on a raised platform beneath a crimson canopy, surrounded by princes, amirs, attendants and musicians. The composition is carefully organised around the central figure of Hulagu, whose elevated position immediately establishes his political and social superiority. He is placed in the most central and elevated position of the upper part of the painting, seated beneath the elaborate canopy and visually separated from the courtiers that surround him. The canopy creates a special royal space around him and almost acts as a portable architectural enclosure, highlighting the privileged status of the ruler. The figures are grouped around and below this central space, depending on their relationship to the ruler. The princes and amirs are gathered in close proximity to Hulagu, while the attendants and servants occupy the surrounding and lower sections of the composition. Musicians are visible on one side, providing a note of entertainment and motion in the otherwise carefully ordered courtly gathering. Horses and attendants in the foreground extend the composition further and link the ceremonial scene with the military and mobile character traditionally associated with Mongol rulership. The system does not try to produce a single realistic view. Instead, different parts of the scene are revealed at the same time so that the viewer can see the ruler, his courtiers, the musicians, the attendants and the objects around them. With this technique, the painting can relate multiple aspects of the event in one visual field. The use of brilliant colours, gold, richly patterned textiles and the large crimson canopy create an atmosphere of luxury and imperial splendour. The juxtaposition of the relatively secluded position of Hulagu with the many figures around him, highlights the hierarchical organization of the court. Thus the feast serves not only as a site of courtly entertainment but also as an image of royal largesse and patronage. The dispensation of favour creates a reciprocal relationship between the ruler and the nobility with Hulagu as the main source of wealth, protection and political authority. The portable tent, carpets and canopy also evoke the nomadic origins of Mongol sovereignty, whereas their sumptuous treatment transforms these portable objects into emblems of imperial splendour. The densely packed composition demonstrates the narrative richness of late Akbari painting, in which many figures, objects and activities could be contained within a single miniature without compromising the central hierarchy of the scene. The painting is also of considerable dynastic significance, for Akbar traced his maternal ancestry to Genghis Khan. Akbar commissioned illustrated histories of the Mongol rulers to incorporate this glorious past into the history of the Mughal dynasty. The presentation of Hulagu is therefore more than a representation of a historical feast. It offers an idealised picture of imperial kingship where power is expressed through hierarchy, largesse, ceremony and the power to command the loyalty of a large court. Thus the miniature illustrates how Mughal painting could turn history into a weapon of imperial ideology, employing composition, colour, spatial hierarchy and courtly symbolism to communicate the ongoing power and legitimacy of the ruler.
'Hulagu Khan Giving a Feast and Dispensing Favor Upon the Amirs and Princes' by Lal, Dharam Das and Padarath, is not just a painting, but an examination of the Mughal hierarchy as a whole. By showcasing the different classes of Mughal society with the composition and shading, the painters showcase the vast power and patronage of the Mughals.
