Horse and Groom, from an Album Page

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles, California, USA.
Location History:The painting originated in Tabriz, Iran, during the Safavid period. LACMA proposes that it may once have belonged to an album compiled for Bahram Mirza, brother of Shah Tahmasp, around 1544–45. The painting later entered the collection of Edwin Binney, 3rd, and ultimately came to LACMA as part of the Edwin Binney, 3rd, Turkish Collection, recorded under accession number M.2010.54.2.

This miniature shows a chestnut horse in a striped blanket, led by a young groom in a blue robe and a white turban with a red plume. It sits inside a gold-flecked border with a calligraphic inscription at the top. The line work and the balanced composition fit early Safavid Tabriz painting, and the horse is drawn with great care. However, the description says the horse is surrounded by several other figures in a landscape, while the image shows only one groom. The paint field also lists only "Ink", although the colors and gold suggest other materials were used, so these details should be checked against the LACMA record.
