Holy Women at Christ's Tomb

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia

"Holy Women at Christ's Tomb" portrays the picture of arrival of a number of holy women – Mary Magdalene and others at Christ's tomb, and the main feature about the scene is that the tomb is empty because the resurrection is already accomplished and the angel usually appears on the canvas for indicating the transition from human grief into realization that Jesus had been resurrected. It has to be said that in most cases gestures and facial expressions play a special role because they help reveal emotions of people; the main ones in the picture under consideration are those of surprise, confusion, and sorrow. Nevertheless, there is always the mood of comfort because the angel gives people reason to feel hope instead of fear. As regards lighting, it helps emphasize the idea of divinity and hope. It means that shadows of people and the tomb show their emotions, but the main purpose of lighting is to illustrate despair and hope. The artwork can be regarded as depicting the episode connected with Christian history.
