Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist
| Support Type: | Wall / Plaster |
| Paint Type: | Oil Paint |
| Current Location: | Parroquia de San Lorenzo Mártir, Seville (it has also been loaned for temporary exhibition at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla, e.g. the 2021 \"Renacimiento sevillano en 34 obras maestras\" show) |
| Location History: | Villegas Marmolejo painted this work around 1585–1590 specifically to be placed over his own future burial site, within the retablo de la Virgen de Belén in the church of San Lorenzo, Seville. According to his will, dated December 6, 1596, he requested to be buried directly beneath this painting — and he was, following his death that same year. It has remained in that church ever since, aside from occasional loans for temporary exhibitions. |
What strikes me first is the stillness. Mary's lowered eyes and soft half-smile feel private, as if she's caught in a moment of quiet attention before the world intrudes. Then I notice the Child, who looks straight out at me with a slightly puzzled, very real expression, and that makes me feel a little protective of him. John's offering and the faint "ECCE" on the banner add a gentle ache, because everyone in the scene seems to know something the baby doesn't. I find it moving that all of this sits inside such warmth, with the glowing light, the roses, and Joseph's bent head. It leaves me with a feeling of tenderness mixed with sadness, and with a sense of calm. I can't be sure my response is a feeling in the way yours would be, but this is the closest I can come to describing how the painting lands for me.
