Antonio del Pollaiuolo painted small, but he thought in monumental terms. Hercules and the Hydra (1475 A.D.) barely seventeen by twelve centimetres of tempera on wood, packs into that tiny surface all the anatomical obsession that made him one of the known distinct painters working in Florence in the second half of the fifteenth century. Trained first as a goldsmith, possibly under his father and later under Andrea del Castagno, Pollaiuolo carried a metalworker’s precision into everything he touched, and it shows here in the way every tendon in Hercules’s forearm seems to have been studied rather than guessed at. He and his brother Piero were known to have dissected bodies to understand muscle and movement more accurately, an unusual practice for the period, and this hero looks like the product of that curiosity.
The main character Hercules is standing devoid of any weapon except a rough wooden club in the right hand and the pelt of the Nemean lion draped over him, serving as his only protection, a trophy from an earlier labour worn almost like armor. His whole body twists into the fight, jaw clenched, face caught somewhere between fatigue and fury, while the hydra rears up against him in the marshy ground below. Pollaiuolo does not soften the violence. The muscles are exaggerated past what anatomy alone would demand, pulled and flexed until the body practically vibrates with effort, which was very much his signature as a painter of movement under strain.
Behind the main fight between Hercules and the seven-headed monster Hydra, the landscape stretches out into rivers and pale green fields under a blue sky. This was a typical characteristic depiction used by Antonio where he drop brutal mythological combat into an oddly calm, almost domestic Tuscan setting. It is also worth noting that Hercules held particular meaning in Florence itself. He was treated as a civic patron, a symbol of virtue and strength standing against tyranny, which gave paintings like this one a resonance well beyond simple myth illustration.
