This folio from the second volume of Abu’l-Fazl’s Akbarnama depicts the event conventionally identified as Hemu’s capture before Akbar and Bairam Khan. It is a tinted drawing (nim qalam) in ink, pigments, and gold on paper, attributed to the Mughal painter Padarath and dated to c. 1603–1605. Its muted palette and linear treatment set it apart from saturated color schemes associated with fully painted Mughal miniatures.
The composition is vertically arranged, leading the eye through a rugged mountain landscape into a densely populated military scene. Rocky outcrops, sinuous paths, trees, and sparse vegetation set up a landscape setting while dividing the narrative into visual zones. In the middle register and below, elephants, horses, soldiers, attendants, and armed figures are arranged in overlapping groups. The animals are rendered with a sensitivity to their bodily contours, movement, and scale, testifying to the Mughal atelier's interest in naturalistic observation. Elephants play an essential part in the visual vocabulary of imperial warfare and spectacle. Padarath creates movement through fine contour lines and not through heavy modeling or strong color. The surface is speckled with small areas of pink, green, yellow, and red, while hints of gold add a touch of understated imperial luxury.The Persian inscription in the upper register ties together text and image and reiterates its function as an illustrated historical manuscript instead of an independent painting.
Moreover, Padarath constructs a complex visual field in which military action, geography, and imperial authority converse. The sensitive handling of the line demonstrates the technical versatility of the Mughal atelier in the late Akbari period and offers evidence of the transition from this to the refined naturalism of later Mughal painting.
The artist has made sure to depict the elephants with precision, their presence indicating war. The magnanimous nature of Akbar's kingdom is the prime aspect of the painting.
