Hemu kneels captured before Akbar and Bairam Khan

Artist:Padarath
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: Chester Beatty, Dublin

Following the sudden death of Humayun, the young Akbar's hold over northern India was fragile. Hemu had swept through Agra and Delhi, claiming imperial titles. The victory at Panipat in 1556 was the existential turning point that secured Mughal rule in South Asia. By illustrating the capture and submission of Hemu, the court chronicles visual proof of Akbar’s divine favor (farr-i izadi), showing how fortune decisively turned against an apparently insurmountable opponent.
