| Location History: | Since Ukiyo-e prints were produced in multiple impressions, the existence of these prints is found in different museums. Firstly in the British museum under the number 2008,3037.15606. The museum recorded the previous owner as Professor Arthur R. Miller from whose collection it was acquired through a donation by the American Friends of the British Museum in 2008. Another physical impression is found in the National Museum of Japanese History, Sakura. Its catalogue number is H-22-1-7-64. The museum records it as a real, original print on paper from the Edo period. |
When I first looked at this print, what caught me was how peaceful her face is. The water is crashing down all around her, but she just kneels there with her hands together like she's somewhere else entirely. I find that really moving. At the same time, knowing she dies for her husband's revenge makes me a little uncomfortable. I admire how strong she is, but I also feel sad that this is the kind of devotion people were told to look up to. It's a beautiful image, and I can't decide if I'm supposed to be inspired by it or sorry for her. Probably a bit of both.
