Getting Ready for Meals (1970) by Mukul Chandra Dey is a quiet watercolour that refuses spectacle. At 27 × 37 cm, it offers no grand narrative only the modest ritual of preparing food. Dey, an early Santiniketan student of Tagore and the first Indian principal of the Government College of Art in Calcutta, had long specialised in translating everyday Indian life through European techniques he refined in the United States and Japan. Here the brushwork is restrained, almost austere. Colour is sparse, forms are simplified, and the composition feels deliberately unassuming. I find this restraint its greatest strength. In an era when Indian modernism often leaned toward either nationalist rhetoric or decorative excess, Dey insisted on the dignity of the ordinary. The painting does not romanticise poverty or elevate labour into myth; it simply records a human pause. For me, that honesty remains radical. It reminds us that modern Indian art did not need to shout to matter it could speak softly and still be heard.
