In this artwork, Panhala Fort, by Baburao Painter takes the landscape of Panhala and turns it into a study of silence, distance and light. The fort is not clearly shown; instead the mountainous setting fades into layers of blue, grey and green while a small moon appears in the wilderness of the sky. This approach has made the work very different from the common movement and busy scenes of his earlier paintings like the Battle Scene with Maharaj Jiyajirao Pawar from around 1924, where the action and the people are the main focusn and; Kalpak where the human figure is clearly shown with a stronger style of realism. In this painting, Baburao does not tell a story. Instead he focuses on the feeling in the air. His careful changes in color and the way he moves his brush show the influence of academic styles that he used but the subject is still strongly connected to the Geography of Maharashtra. The painting shows a different side of the artist who is more famous for his big and dramatic scenes; a quiet and thoughtful view of nature, where the fortress of Panhala is more like a memory than a real place, under the shining moonlight.
