Flora (1894), oil on canvas by Evelyn De Morgan, depicts the Roman goddess of flowers before a fruiting loquat tree, scattering blossoms underfoot. Her gown, painted over gold leaf, evokes Florentine altarpieces; a scarlet scarf bears gold swallows, a Christian symbol of resurrection, while nearby goldfinches reference Christ's Passion, layering Christian meaning over pagan myth. The composition reworks Botticelli's Primavera, though Flora stands alone, melancholic amid abundance, suggesting mortality within spring's renewal. An Italian scroll links her birthplace, Florence, to her new home in Scotland. Commissioned by patron William Imrie, the painting belongs to the De Morgan Collection.
