The painting was acquired by Robert Lehman from the Lock Galleries, New York, in 1966 and bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1975.

Figures and a Dog in Landscape is a fine example of a landscape genre piece, where the landscape is seen as being populated with a group of figures, including a man, a woman and a female child, accompanied by a dog.
