Fierce Tiger

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Tokyo Fuji Art Museum

The monochrome ink-and-wash technique contributes to the meaning of the work. The different shades of black and grey create depth without relying on colour. The strong, broad brushstrokes used for the rocks contrast with the softer washes used for the tiger's fur and the waves. This contrast gives the painting both strength and delicacy. The foliage growing from the cracks in the rocks further suggests life and persistence within a harsh environment. Overall, I think the painting represents strength, awareness, and resilience in the face of an unpredictable world. The tiger appears powerful, but it is not shown as completely dominant over nature. Instead, it exists within the larger environment, responding carefully to the rocks, waves, and surroundings. This gives the painting a deeper message: true strength is not only about power, but also about remaining alert, adaptable, and composed when faced with change and difficulty.
