Ramkinkar Baij was one of the most prominent Indian sculptors and painters, who also served as a key figure in pioneering modern Indian sculpture as well as contextual modernism, which mainly started in Shantiniketan, West Bengal. Belonging to an economically modest family in Bankura, West Bengal, he challenges social norms as well as industrial stereotypes and paves a new way of reshaping modern Indian art and structuralism. Even though mainly he's known for his sculpting works, he is also well recognised as an iconoclastic painter and graphic artist who redefined the rigid academic standards of art. The above painting titled "Festive Eve" perfectly captures his aesthetic standards and sentiments. A very prominent feature of his paintings is his Baij's description of female figures. Even in this painting, the figure study of female subjects is presented masterfully through his sharp and precise brush strokes which is adding a fluid and graceful kinesthetic touch to the composition. The femininity in this compactly constructed composition beautifully portray their simple, rythmic lives. This oil on canvas also depicts the rural and earthy grace of the setting through the warm colour palette with main colours being brown and green.
