Farewell at Night a painting from the Rasamanjari series shows the tension of separation between two lovers. Farewell at Night shows a princely man standing at the entrance of a pavilion his folded hands hinting that he is preparing to leave. Farewell at Night also shows the woman reclining helplessly against a cushion her face of grief and emotional exhaustion. The strong division in the composition reinforces separation: the coloured pavilion is set against a vast dark aubergine landscape outside. The golden trees, arranged in shapes highlight the stillness and emptiness of the night. Rich reds, yellows, blues and pinks create a surface that is emotionally charged a hallmark of Pahari painting. The womans relaxed body and tilted head speak of vulnerability while the mans gesture shows restraint and departure. Farewell, at Night does not show action; it shows longing and anticipation. Through the idea of rasa separation becomes an expression of love and absence makes love feel even stronger.
