Emissaries Bring News from the Provinces of Khaybar and Chin to Anoshirvan

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna

This miniature painti.ng is a part of the Hamzanama. Depicted here is a look at the emissaries arriving before the Sasanian ruler Anoshirvan to deliver news from distant provinces. It reflects the political significance of diplomacy, communication and royal authority in Persian court culture. The carefully arranged figures, elaborate costumes and architectural details portray the refinement of Persian miniature painting. The narrative deals with the consequences of injustice and irresponsible leadership, as the emissaries report how oppression has brought suffering and ruin to the two regions. The artwork was made under the patronage of Mughal emperor Akbar between 1557 and 1577. The combination of Persian artistic traditions and Indian visual elements are a defining characteristic of Mughal paintings.
