Elephant and rider

Artist:Kesu Kahar
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: RIJKSMUSEUM

This work represents a meditation on power, companionship, and human dependence on the natural world. The rider’s relationship with the elephant suggests that authority is not necessarily based on dominance, but can emerge through trust and cooperation. The elephant may symbolize strength, wisdom, and endurance, while the rider represents human ambition guided by a larger force. The peaceful atmosphere suggests harmony between human beings and nature, rather than conflict. At the same time, the contrast between the figures invites reflection on hierarchy and control: even when humans appear powerful, they remain dependent on forces greater than themselves.
