The painting was housed at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice from 1997 to 2016, before going on display at the Museo del Novecento in Milan from 2022 onwards.
Boccioni was not interested in the representation of a particular athlete or a specific sport for its own sake; rather, what fascinated him and what he sought to capture in his works was movement, the dynamism of a figure in motion: the representation of movement is a fundamental theme in Futurism and essential to fully understanding its works.
In Dynamism of a Cyclist, the artist brings this idea to its fullest expression, introducing another element as well: the relationship between the moving object (in this case, the cyclist) and the surrounding space. Even during the Futurist period, science had already made a major discovery: everything is composed of atoms, even what appears to us to be "empty," such as the air around us; it follows that when a body moves, it also alters the surrounding environment, although we are often unable to perceive it. To represent all the changes produced by the movement of an object, the painter cannot rely on traditional pictorial techniques or on the imitation of nature. In this work, the artist seeks to celebrate the urban environment and exalt speed; the cyclist, camouflaged among geometric lines of various colours, fills the composition, racing along a city street and, leaning forward over his bicycle, seems to speed ahead almost as if he were riding a motorcycle. The luminosity emerges from within the figures, and the flow of light conveys the sensation of successive moments unfolding; the crisp, pure colours, combined with the emergence of black within the composition, give the painted forms an expressive emphasis on movement.
Dynamism of a Cyclist by Umberto Boccioni is a vibrant and energetic painting that captures the speed and power of a cyclist in motion. Created in the Futurist style, the artwork does not present the cyclist as a realistic figure. right colours such as blue, yellow, orange, green, and purple blend together to create a sense of movement and energy.
