Duryodhana and Salya

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Mixed Media
Current Location: Victoria and Albert Museum, London

In this Mughal miniature for Akbar’s Razmnama (Persian version of Mahabharata), Duryodhana tries convincing King Salya to serve as Karna’s charioteer before the battle of Kurukshetra. A painting full of symbolism, showing the plush royal seats, entourage, setting implying all show of authority, while negotiation itself seems a prelude to a ethical conflict. Even Salya accepts with a sense of resignation showing the conflict between personal morality and political commitment. To me the painting is not only about showing the soft skill of persuasion, the moral ambivalence in making allianeces. It is also to reminds that history making moves do not happen just on the battle-ground, but is driven through those small rounds of discussions in a closed room, where loyalty, ego and duty mingle, leading up to big events. Also the Mughal effort of telling story of Hindus also has larger message that stories are not confined by the borders of region/ religion/ traditions etc. We are one family of human!
