Originally created in 1763 as a set of fusuma (sliding door) panels for a Buddhist temple in Kyoto (the exact temple is unknown), Dragon and Clouds was later removed from its original setting, with four central panels eventually lost. The surviving panels entered William Sturgis Bigelow’s collection and were donated to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1911, where they remain today.
Dragon and Clouds is one of the most extraordinary surviving works of the eccentric Edo-period painted by Soga Shōhaku. Soga Shōhaku was a noted artist known for challenging conventional artistic tradition through his bold imagination and expressive brushwork. Soga Shōhaku started his artistic journey in his late 20s, learning from the masters of the Kanō school while also studying the technique of Soga school and Unkoku school whose influence can be traced easily in his work. Shōhaku drew inspiration from medieval Japanese ink painting and Chinese Zen aesthetics, developing a distinctive visual language that was dramatic, unconventional, and emotionally charged. Dragon and Clouds is executed in ink on washi paper, the composition depicts a colossal dragon emerging from swirling clouds with extraordinary energy and movement. Shōhaku was a master at creating art pieces that captured both spiritual authority and untamed force of his subjects. The absence of colour further heightens the impact of the composition, allowing the richness of ink tones and dynamic brush strokes to be the primary means of expression.
