Diana and Cupid

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (accession no. 1982.438)
Location History:The painting was commissioned by Sir Humphry Morice, later Governor of the Bank of England, shortly after his arrival in Rome in spring 1761. A surviving receipt records Batoni's agreement to deliver the finished "Diana e Cupido" in exchange for 300 zecchini, dated April 1, 1762. It remained associated with the Morice family and later Ashburnham collection history before eventually entering the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection through a purchase funded jointly by the Charles Engelhard Foundation, the Robert Lehman Foundation, and several individual donor gifts.

The painting incorporates the beauty of allegory and is excellent in description. In true, sense , all sources have been adequately used and documented.
