Dattatreya presents divinity not through grandeur or overwhelming symbolism, but through an unexpectedly human and tranquil presence. Baburao Krishnarao Mestry transforms a deity traditionally represented with three heads and six arms into a youthful ascetic whose quiet expression evokes humility, wisdom, and spiritual discipline. Although the additional arms are only faintly suggested, they subtly preserve Dattatreya's divine identity while allowing his humanity to remain at the forefront. The monochromatic palette and delicate tonal transitions create an atmosphere of serenity, encouraging the viewer to focus on contemplation rather than spectacle. The cow and dog are not merely accompanying figures; they symbolise compassion, loyalty, and the harmonious coexistence of all living beings, reinforcing the spiritual philosophy of unity with nature. The restrained composition and gentle modelling of light further emphasise detachment from worldly desires, making the artwork feel meditative and timeless. Rather than glorifying divine power, Mestry celebrates inner purity, renunciation, and universal interconnectedness, presenting spirituality as something compassionate, accessible, and deeply rooted in everyday existence.
