Baburao Krishnarao Mestry's (Baburao Painter) Dattatreya (1926) is a devotional oil painting that reflects the artist's mastery in combining academic realism with Indian religious iconography. The work depicts the Hindu deity Dattatreya, revered as the unified manifestation of the Trimurti; Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (Mahesh), which presents him as the eternal guru, embodying wisdom, detachment, and spiritual harmony. The painting was executed in oil on canvas during the mature phase of Baburao Painter's artistic career. The work indicates the influence of European academic painting, particularly in its naturalistic rendering, controlled perspective and modelling of form. At the same time, it remains deeply rooted in Indian artistic traditions through its iconography and spiritual intent. Baburao Painter was known for depicting Hindu deities with realistic human proportions while preserving their symbolic and religious significance, making his works accessible to both devotees and art enthusiasts.
