Crane

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata

Abanindranath Tagore’s Crane (1915-16) creates an image of a still life of wildlife that provokes thoughts of peace, presence, and self-control. The artist breaks away from the European academic tradition of anatomically correct modeling and manages to move to a new level of expressionism using brushstrokes, muted colors, and the Japanese technique of washes. The pose of the bird and the overall simplicity of composition draw the viewer into a reflective state, evoking feelings of serenity and calmness. Thus, the crane as a mediator between action and inaction, desire and fulfillment, serves as a reminder to be focused and patient. The use of indigenous aesthetics and their combination with the techniques of different cultures in this artwork makes it possible to elevate the theme of a simple walk in nature to the creation of a meditative spiritual experience.
