Mattia Preti's St George on Horseback (1658) is not simply the image of a Christian warrior saint, it is an eloquent testament to the strength of faith, fortitude and moral integrity that can conquer apprehension and sin. Preti portrays St George not as a pugilistic hero but as an unruffled, determined figure, directed by angelic hands and riding the shining white horse of innocence and heavenly mission. The painting was commissioned as an altarpiece for the Co-Cathedral of St John in Malta and it carried an allusion to the exemplary character of the Order of St John, for whom St George was the ideal of Christian knighthood and selfless devotion. What strikes me most of all is the interplay between earthly battle and celestial direction. The saint's victory does not seem due solely to his physical power but also to his sheer confidence in God. To me, the painting signifies how each of us faces, metaphorically, certain beasts-fear, injustice, temptation, or despair-and in each case, being heroic implies to confront them with honor, steadiness and Godly belief. Even with its Baroque opulence, the artwork effectively emphasizes how the most meaningful struggles are moral and spiritual and how eventual triumph is for those whose bravery stems from morality, not strength.
