Christ stands to the right wrapped in a bright white drapery that contrasts with the warm, fiery tones of Mary Magdalenes dress and symbolises his purified resurrected body. With his right hand he gently but firmly restrains her enacting the biblical words " do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father ". This leads the painting to become a study in spiritual tension between human longing and divine distance. Ivanov stages the scene against a dark and indistinct background, focusing all of the attention on the two figures and expressions. Mary's tearful awe and Christ's calm and compassionate authority are rendered with a blend of neoclassical clarity and romantic psychological depth. The artwork was painted in Italy as a progress report for the Society of Encouragement of Artists in St Petersberg and its success at the Imperial Academy of Arts helped secure Ivanov's status as an academician as it reflects his engagement with Italian Renaissance models of composition and light.
