Alessandro Magnasco through his wild and energetic brushtrokes beautifully encapsulates a powerful biblical narrative of Christ and the Samaritan women taken from John 4:1-42. The long lasting feud between the Samaritans and the Jews was proved to be irrelevant just by this simple action of Christ , who broke class and religious prejudice by asking for water from a marginalized outcast. The expressions on each of the subjects' faces represent a very normal snippet of everyday life which try to make a point that these instances of the Bible helps one in their daily life too. The use of light and shadow bring an important effect on the painting as the contrast of the dark background to the illuminated subjects provide a deeper meaning that how Christ as the Son of God served as the bearer of light to guide humanity throughout the dark times that humans were going through.
