Catherine II by Alexey Antropov presents power not merely as a political position but as an image carefully constructed through visual grandeur. Catherine is placed at the centre of the composition, immediately commanding attention through her elaborate imperial garments, jewelled ornaments and imposing posture. The crown and sceptre positioned beside her reinforce her authority, transforming these objects into visual symbols of sovereignty and legitimacy. The rich fabrics, gold details and deep background create a sense of luxury while simultaneously separating the Empress from the ordinary world. Her composed expression further contributes to the image of controlled and unquestionable power. Interestingly, Antropov’s portrayal does not emphasise military strength or political action; instead, authority is communicated through stillness, wealth and ceremonial symbolism. The portrait therefore reflects how imperial art could function as a powerful instrument of representation, shaping Catherine’s public image and presenting her rule as natural, magnificent and firmly established.
