A German princess, Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, came to Russia as a young woman to marry soon-to-be emperor, Peter III. With this marraige, Sophie converted to Russian orthodoxy and took the name Yekaterina (Catherine) Alekseyevna. Catherine, in 1762, became the empress quiet unusually when a palace coup overthrew Peter III. According to certain sources, Catherine had played a major role in overthrowing and also possibly in assasinating her husband to snatch the Russian throne. It is this newly established sovereign, Catherine II, who is painted in this work by Alexey Antropov. This is not Antropov's first commission for Catherine. He had already worked for the imperial court and painted Catherine before she became the empress, as the Grand Duchess Yekaterina Alekseyevna. In the painting seen above, the Empress Catherine II appears with charm and glory. She is seen sitting in her royal garments exuding luxury with the crown beside her and holding the sceptre (a traditional symbol of imperial authority and sovereignty.) in her right hand. Behind her, in a dark colour palette, is hint of the royal palace. Painted by Alexey Antropov, this peice is a phenomenal instance of art being used as a device to impose imperial authority and display power. Apart from this portrait, several others were made by Alexey Antropov who was well known for his portrait paintings. Born to a family of government official, alexey initially worked as a member of the "painting team" under Ivan Vishnyakov, at chancellery under his relative. As a member of this painting team, he took part in painting of several frescos at Summer Palace, Winter Palace, Anichkov Palace and other buildings of Saint Petersburg. He was also a student of the court painter, Louis Caravaque of France and studied portraiture from him. Around 1750s he received rank of the master painter.
The Portrait of Empress Catherine II, one of the greatest Monarchs of the Russian Empire, is an incredible work done by the Russian painter Alexey Antropov. In the work, we can see Catherine II seated down. She is wearing an absolutely lavish dress and an ermine fur cloak that has the emblems of the Russian Empire on the outside. She stares at the observer, with a look that is at once arrogant but also wise, displaying the level of respect that the painter has for the Empress. On the side, we can see a table with a pillow, upon which the royal crown rests. The work shows the wealth and regality of the Russian Empire.
