Butterfly and Chinese Wisteria Flowers

Artist:Xu Xi
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Shanghai Museum in China

This painting captures the spirit of the power of nature by demonstrating the relationship between flourishing wisteria and one butterfly. The hanging flowers, the branches as well as the delicate leaves contribute to the feeling of motion. The butterfly is nicely contrasted. I am fond of how the painting does not require a specific moment to feel beautiful. It is the beauty that is achieved through the colors as well as the use of the empty space interacting with the elements of the image. The branches are resembling the spread across the paper giving the setting the rhythm. For me the painting is making me realize that beauty often appears in a moment of nature. The butterfly and the flowers remind me of how fragile life can be, on how it renews and on the connection between everything in nature. Although this piece is widely associated with Xu Xi we should double-check the sources before determining who painted it or what its historical meaning is.
