Brihaspati Describes the Evils of Monarchy to King Vasumanas

Artist:Bhagwan
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Lewis M 33, housed at the Free Library of Philadelphia
Location History:The folio originally formed part of the imperial Razmnama produced under Emperor Akbar in 1598–99. The manuscript was subsequently dispersed; much of it appeared at a London auction in 1921, after which 25 illustrated folios entered the collection of American collector John Frederick Lewis. After Lewis died in 1932, his widow donated the group to the Free Library of Philadelphia, where it remains. The folios were exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1923–24 and later at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, including The Book of War exhibition in 2007.

The painting depicting the conversation between Brihaspati and King Vasumanas illustrates an important philosophical episode from the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, emphasizing the necessity of kingship for maintaining social order and dharma. Through the interaction between the sage and the ruler, the artwork presents political authority as a responsibility guided by wisdom and moral principles. The carefully arranged figures, surrounded by rocks, trees, and vegetation, demonstrate the Mughal artist’s ability to integrate narrative clarity with detailed landscape painting. The varied natural forms create spatial depth while directing attention towards the central exchange. Produced in the context of Akbar’s Razmnama project, the painting also reflects the cultural synthesis fostered by the Mughal atelier. The Persian translation of the Sanskrit epic encouraged intellectual exchange between Indian traditions and the Persianate courtly culture. Thus, the painting transcends mere illustration, presenting kingship as an ethical institution essential for justice, protection, and the preservation of social harmony.
