Bogatyrs were warriors of Russian folklore similar to the knights in medieval England. They were historically introduced during Vladimir the Great's rule similar to the Knights of the Roundtable in the Arthur Cycle. In this painting however, Vasnetsov depicts three of the most famous bogatyrs from Russian stories. From left to right they are: Dobrynya Nikitich, Ilya Muromets, Alyosha Popovich. The scholar Ivan Pavlov says that they depict the three temperaments, Dobrynya Nikitich is impulsive, drawing his sword and ready to rush at the enemy, while Ilya Muromets surveys the enemies planning how best to rush them. Alyosha Popovich, according to Pavlov, has already sized up the enemies while planning how to escape them.
This painting influenced several generations of people's imagination of the bogatyrs as Viktor Vasnetsov wished to leave as his legacy. His attention to painting the bogatyrs as close to their descriptions in the folk tales is visible in the various details of the three men. Their character silhouettes also play a large role in creating the identity of these characters. This painting has a charm only found in children's books of fairytales.This is due to the vibrancy of the colour palette as well as the details on the horses, the armor and the faces of the men that a child would likely spend a lot of time looking at in the midst of a story.
