Bogatyrs by Viktor Vasnetsov (1898) is a monumental Russian painting depicting three legendary heroic warriors; Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich, and Alyosha Popovich riding across the open Russian landscape. The three figures represent different forms of heroic character. Ilya Muromets, placed centrally, is the strongest and most imposing, symbolising physical power and the protection of the Russian land. Dobrynya Nikitich appears alert and noble, associated with courage and aristocratic virtue, while Alyosha Popovich, the youngest, represents intelligence, agility, and cunning. Their horses and weapons reinforce their individual personalities. Vasnetsov uses a vast horizon, muted colours, and monumental scale to connect the warriors with the Russian landscape. The open steppe creates a sense of vigilance, suggesting that the heroes are constantly guarding their homeland. The painting draws heavily on Russian byliny (epic folklore) and medieval traditions, transforming legendary figures into symbols of national identity.
