It doesn't really feel like a bird. It feels like Tagore has taken the idea of a bird—eyes, beak, feathers, wings—and allowed it to mutate into something psychologically unfamiliar. There's something almost prehistoric / extraterrestrial / dream-creature-like about it. The most striking thing to me is that the creature seems simultaneously: alive watchful awkward threatening comical and strangely beautiful That ambiguity is what makes it work. The eyes are especially important The eyes give the image an almost unsettling consciousness. Rather than depicting a bird observed from outside, Tagore seems to be inventing a creature that has its own interior world. You get the sensation that it is looking back at you. And that's quite different from decorative bird painting.
