Baz Bahadur flees Mandu

Artist:Jagan
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Victoria and Albert Museum

The battle scene depicts the Mughal interpretation of the Malwa king Baz Bahadur's defeat intending to portay the Malwan side as weak. The artwork represents the might of the victorious Mughal forces. The very first province to fall in the Mughal invasion into the Indian conquest was depicted vividly to serve as a big moral boost for the Mughal forces. Such paintings were indeed part of the moral and soft culture supporting the Mughal invasions. The message it sends across is that the Mughal forces are more powerful- they are dressed in conical hats and military finery with their horses dressed fully with protective coats can be seen as being in dominant position in the battle. The Mughal soldiers are either aiming at the opponent or in positions of being close to a vanquished head of the opponent- both showing off the might of the imperial power.
