Baz Bahadur Flees before Humayun

Artist:Bhura
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati

This miniature depicts the dramatic flight of Sultan Bahadur of Gujarat before Humayun’s forces, combining historical narrative with the energetic visual language of the early Akbari atelier. The crowded composition is filled with charging horsemen, elephants, infantry, falling soldiers and scattered weapons, creating a powerful sense of movement and confusion. The large central tree functions as a visual axis, while the rocky landscape divides the battlefield into overlapping episodes. The retreating forces move diagonally across the page, contrasting with the advancing Mughal warriors and reinforcing the narrative of defeat. Tents, buildings and distant hills extend the action into the background, demonstrating the artist’s ability to integrate landscape with historical storytelling. The detailed costumes, weapons, horses and expressive gestures reflect the Akbarnama workshop’s interest in close observation. Executed by Bhura, with faces attributed to Bhimjiv, the painting illustrates how Akbar’s atelier transformed a past military event into a visually compelling narrative of imperial conquest and Mughal authority.
