Sahibdin was the leading artist in the Mewar School of Miniature painting during the first half of the 16th century. As a Muslim artist with royal patrons in the Rajput culture, he earned fame for his emotional intensity and mastery of composition and use of color in his art. Sahibdin's superb painting shows a significant event from the Yuddha Kanda (Book of War), which is the sixth book of the Hindu epic Ramayana that was commissioned for Maharana Jagat Singh of Mewar between 1649 and 1653. The painting demonstrates the artist's skill in continuous narrative composition, which is characteristic of the Mewar tradition of painting that allows for the representation of many events taking place at the same time in a unified work of art.
The artwork shows the fierce battle between Rama’s vanara (monkey) army and Ravana’s rakshasa (demon) troops just outside the golden walls of Lanka. Sahibdin employs innovative spatial division, using diagonally placed bumpy terrain as well as vivid blocks of color such as deep red, bright yellow, and green to show several moments of battle on one canvas. The characters are tightly stacked together but still distinct; vanara warriors throw boulders and trees at the enemy, while flamboyantly dressed multi-headed demons attack back from chariots and war elephants.
Aesthetically, the creation merges different features of the traditional Rajput art like flat color fields, expressive faces, and floral decor in a simple way along with some qualities of the contemporary Mughal art like the careful depiction of arms, rosettes, and mountain scenery. The buildings in Lanka are placed at the top of the folio against the vast sky which helps to better understand the enormity of the divine siege. The emotion of the painting is achieved by the use of thick outlines and the effective choice of colors which together symbolize fight, chaos, and victory.
Composed in the royal workshop of Udaipur between 1649 and 1653 for Maharana Jagat Singh I of Mewar, the artwork was kept in the treasury (library) of Mewar for more than 170 years. In 1823, Maharana Bhim Singh of Udaipur gave the manuscript with the paintings to Colonel James Tod, a military man and historian from Rajasthan. After taking the manuscript to Great Britain, Tod presented it to Prince Augustus Frederick of Sussex. After the prince died, the manuscript was purchased by the British Museum Library in 1844.
Shahib Din's artwork and paintings show a beautiful amalgamation of Mughal and Rajput art. The use of bold colours and clear description of a narrative, in this case the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana, is one of the most significant aspects of the painting. Art is used to tell stories, and it shows just that.
