Ilya Repin was born on 5th August in Chuhuiv, present day Ukraine, then, part of the Russian empire. The Russian empire, at the time was marked by social inequality, poverty and strict class divisions. Much of the population struggled with poor living condition and political freedom was limited. Repin's father, Yefim Repin, was a military settler and horse trader who had served in the Russian army and his mother, Tatiana Repina, was educated, and taught her children to read and write. Through his modest upbringing, Repin, was exposed to everyday lives of ordinary people and his art became his voice against social injustice, making him one of the leading realist painters of his time. Intially, he began his artistic training in his hometown, by studying icon painting under local masters. As he developed his practice, he moved to St. Petersburg in 1863, to pursue formal art education. He was admitted to the prestigious Imperial Academy of Arts in 1864 where he studied drawing, painting, and composition under experienced professors. Repin graduated with the Academy's highest honor, the Gold Medal, which enabled him to travel across Europe. Returning to Russia, after his travels, he began painting scenes of ordinary workers and peasants instead of mythological or idealized subjects. During this time, he painted his famous painting, "Barge Haulers on the Volga" (1870–1873), which portrayed exhausted laborers pulling a barge along the Volga River. At the forground of the painting we see these downtrodden people, huddled together and trying to pull the barge, which is a flatbottomed boat; these had to be physically dragged to the shore when there was no steam engine or motorized tugboat. Blackbands tied around the people are basically tied to the ropes used to pull the boat, standing behind. The subject matter in the centre of a peaceful surrounding with clear blue sky haunts the viewer into thinking about the unfairness. Some figures in the forefront, stare at the viewers accusingly, compelling them to confront the inhumanity unfolding before them. This work, and Repin's beliefs impressed the Peredvizhniki, a group of Russian artists who were dissatisfied with the strict rules of the Imperial Academy of Arts. This group was formed in 1870 and it believed that art should reflect real life, address social issues, and be accessible to ordinary people rather than just the aristocracy. After an invitation from the Peredvizhniki, Repin, officially became associated with the group and soon became one of its most celebrated members. Through their travelling exhibitions, his paintings reached audiences across the Russian Empire.
