| Location History: | 1539-1543 (Safavid Court): The manuscript was originally commissioned for and copied in the court of the Safavid ruler Shah Tahmasp I. 1676 (Safavid Court): The manuscript remained in the royal collection and was augmented during the 17th century; several paintings were added or retouched by the artist Muhammad Zaman around 1676. 1827-1828 (Qajar Period): A historical note in the manuscript dated to this time indicates that the Qajar ruler Fath-Ali Shah gave the book to the princess Tāj al-Dawlah. 1880-Present (British Library): The manuscript was ultimately sold to the British Library on October 9, 1880, where it is currently preserved. |
The artwork is particularly striking because of the way the painter blends two contrasting features of rigid geometry as seen in the depiction of the tile and blooming depiction of the plants. Furthermore, the details are intricate offering visual importance to each figure painted.
