Bahram Chubina Slays the Lion-Ape

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, United States
Location History:The painting is Folio 715v from the Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp, the famous Safavid royal manuscript. The folio is now part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection. The Met records that it was acquired as a gift from Arthur A. Houghton Jr. in 1970.

The artist arranges buildings, vegetation, figures and animals across the surface so that several parts of the story can be appreciated at once. The vivid colours, fine outlines, gold details and intricate patterns create the luxurious appearance associated with Safavid royal manuscripts.
