Babur’s troops defying the enemy at the fort of Qaba

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: British Library, London

This artwork, titled "Babur's Troops Defying the Enemy at the Fort of Qaba," is like an action scene frozen in time, depicting a fierce battle between two forces protected by the ramparts within which they are positioned. Separated by a river, the two sides fire arrows and bullets at each other, creating a sense of movement and intensity within the composition. The soldiers in the lower part of the composition also seem to be protecting the cattle and a wounded soldier. As a folio from the Baburnama, the painting also shows how Babur's troops bravely protect the fort while he is engaged in combat elsewhere. This folio, depicting an early stage in Babur's life, can be seen as foreshadowing the struggles that he would continue to face before ventually establishing his empire in the Indian subcontinent.
